Most residence halls close for winter break. Students who reside in these communities must leave the building by noon on Dec. 18, 2021 and should not plan to return until the halls reopen at 2 p.m. Jan. 5, 2022. Visit the housing BREAKS AND MOVE OUT page for a list of halls that close and those that do not.

For students who leave, we ask they complete the following tasks:

• Pack all essential items (medication, passport, fish, needed electronics, chargers, etc.)
• Take their UGACard (they will need this when they return!)
• Clean room/apartment as best as possible
• Take all trash to the dumpster
• Close and lock all windows and lower the blinds

• Remove all perishables from the refrigerator and the room
• Unplug everything except for the refrigerator
• Put the thermostat on heat at 68 degrees or lowest setting
• Turn off all lights
• Lock the door(s)

• If the space is not fully occupied, prepare extra sets of furniture (bed, dresser, desk, etc.) for a new roommate to arrive in January

In addition to scheduled maintenance, such as changing filters, carpet cleaning and deep cleaning of community spaces, University Housing staff will enter every room to conduct a quarterly health and safety inspection and to ensure students have followed the steps listed above. Failure to complete items on the checklist may result in a fee charged to your student's account.
